Gerry Marsden tries out a Vox 7120 in Hessy’s music shop in Liverpool

This excellent blog gives Martin Craig’s eyewitness account of the event:

“I would have occasion to see [the power of Vox amps] in person, when in late 1966 or early 1967, after one of my quick soup lunches, I ran to Frank Hessy’s shop, as I often used to; but on this occasion, there were lots of noisy fans barring my way. I asked, and was told Gerry Marsden was inside, preparing to test a 7120 Vox … 120 watts! That I could not miss. I went forward, and took up position in the first row. Roy, my coworker, was already there. Gerry plugged his Gretsch into the Vox, switched on, and started playing; we all thought that the roof of the building would fly off. We were breathtaken. When he finished the test, curious bystanders began to say that it was ridiculous, the public would go deaf if they used amplifiers as powerful as those – not understanding the need for such great power. ‘The mains fuses will never hold out!’ ”

“Gerry Marsden knew better of course. In large stadiums in the United States, even The Beatles managed to hear themselves when they played. Indeed, Gerry loved the Vox 7120,…said he planned to take one to America to use in the concerts he was to give with the Pacemakers. People who saw him try it [on that day], thought nonsense “.
